It'll be a long trip for people hoping to get out of Mokau today, with roads still closed after a slip and no alternative routes.

State Highway 3, just south of Mokau, will remain closed until at least midday following a rock fall yesterday morning.

NZ Transport Agency's Karen Boyt says the roads have been assessed and are not safe to travel on.

"There's no suitable alternative apart from using State Highway 1 through the middle of the North Island. The options are to wait and travel once the road is open, or to take that large alternative."

Motorists opting for SH1 will face being on the roads an extra three-and-a-half hours.

Ms Boyt says an engineer will assess the safety of the road again at midday and will decide if it is suitable to travel on.

"Rocks have continued to fall… cracking has occurred and there is water getting into those cracks."
