A police operation in Kaiwaka is over, after an armed raid failed to find the dangerous gunman Joshua Kite.

A police spokesperson said the Armed Offenders Squad and officers were "conducting a search warrant at an address in Kaiwaka".

Seven or eight loud gunshots were heard as armed police completed the search warrant.

The manhunt for Kite began early on Friday morning when police tried to stop a car on Bank Street in Whangarei. But the man driving the car shot at the officers and then took their unmarked patrol car.

The gunman crashed the police car later in a nearby suburb of Whangarei and hijacked another car, forcing its two occupants out at gunpoint.

The hijacked car was later found near the Northland rural town of Maungaturoto.

Police continue to ask anyone who sees Kite to call Police immediately on 111.

Police also ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact their local police or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
