Sky Tower Stair Challenge raises $1.2M

More than $1.2 million has been raised in this year's Sky Tower Firefighter Stair Climb Challenge.

Participants climbed 51 flights of stairs, 1103 steps, all in the name of helping leukaemia and blood cancer patients in New Zealand.

It wasn't just the Fire Service taking part either; some of New Zealand's most influential people also ascended the Sky Tower, among them new Breakers coach Paul Henare.

You can never really prepare yourself for what's to come. Participants are subjected to a constant mental battle as much as a physical one, but it's all for a good cause.

Pru Etchevery, chief executive of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand says the event offers critical support to the organisation.

"This event really has formed such a big backbone of our support and what we can do."

The feeling of crossing that finish line is unlike any other, and Mr Henare admitted he was "absolutely stuffed".

There was even a bit of competition between the news teams, as Newshub went head-to-head with One News anchor Wendy Petrie and the New Zealand Herald's Tristram Clayton.

Despite the laugh, today's battle was nothing really compared to the war leukaemia and blood cancer patients fight.
