Police have named the Italian man who died while sky diving in Wanaka after his parachutes failed.

Antonino Arillotta, 38, plunged to the ground when both his main and emergency chutes failed - an occurrence one industry expert told RadioLIVE is very rare.

The Italian Embassy in Wellington says Mr Arillotta came to New Zealand in October this year and was hired by Skydive Wanaka as a photographer.

A spokesman from the Italian Embassy says they are in touch with the family back in Italy.

“Now we need to do all the procedures about sending back the body to the relatives. In one week two weeks the body will go back to Italy.”

He says the family is grieving.

“The sister started to cry, the brother we are in touch with. It’s like something they don’t expect.”
