Coromandel Peninsula residents and roading contractors have a major clean-up ahead after a weekend of heavy rain.

There are numerous slips still blocking roads while debris covers highways which had been flooded.

Pauanui local Doug Gooch was unable to get home from Auckland, stranded on Hikuai Settlement Rd, the road into Pauanui from the west.

"We've been in contact with people on the other side, in town - we were led to believe we could get through, but it's a matter of whether you want to risk it."

Another car with three children inside had to be towed out of water on Hikuai Settlement Rd.

Heavy rain is expected to continue through the week, but the worst of it has passed, moving onto the East Cape and Hawke's Bay.

Thames-Coromandel District Council area manager Garry Fowler told RadioLIVE's James Coleman motorists need to be aware of road closures.

"State Highway 25, the intersection to Pauanui and heading onto Tairua is still closed - it will probably be closed for another four or five hours before we can really assess it."

It's expected to open around 11am.

"There's a lot of debris on the roads. There's been a lot of slips."

Flooding has affected local water supplies and there is no timeframe for it being restored to Matatoki, south of Kopu.

"Crews can't reach the water intake to investigate the problem because a bridge is flooded," Thames-Coromandel District Council said in a statement.
