Spark has announced a new programme that will bring heavily subsidised broadband to some of New Zealand's low-income families.

Spark Jump was rolled out at Hornby High School in Christchurch this afternoon, promising to deliver entry-level home broadband at a quarter of the price.

Alesha Millard has been trialling the scheme for the last three months, and says it has given her 11-year-old son Luke opportunities the family could never have afforded previously.

"He can keep in contact with all his friends, and friends from all his previous schools, and play heaps of games. Yeah - and doing homework," she says.

Spark hopes to make the initiative available to up to 5000 homes in the next 12 months.
