Wellington cat owners can now get their beloved moggies snipped and chipped for a fraction of the usual price.

The SPCA has teamed up with local veterinary practices and Wellington City Council to offer desexing and microchipping packages for only $9.

Adele Hawkswell from the SPCA says it's aimed at encouraging responsible cat ownership and education.

"What we're aiming to do is improve the life of pet cats in Wellington, so we believe desexed pets are happier and healthier pets," she says.

Ms Hawkswell says it also increases the chance of owners being reunited with lost pets.

"A lot of families in Wellington have pets - we know that. I think a lot of the time with preventative medicine, such as desexing, and preventative treatment, like microchipping, sometimes it can go to the end of the priority list, especially with families that have other things to worry about."

She hopes the initiative will roll out across the country.

"We can be helping those owner that want to do the right thing with their animals - give them a happy and healthy life - and the fact that we're making that possible is really exciting."

The cost to get a cat desexed can range from $70 to $150.

The initiative will be launched on Tuesday, and Wellington cat owners will be able to buy vouchers online.
