A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck the lower North Island this morning.

It rocked buildings in Wellington and residents in the capital say it felt like the earthquake went on for at least a minute.

"It started low and slow with a small rumble and started shaking around, and grew in intensity. Buildings actually made noises out of it," Wellington resident David Arundel said.

There have been no immediate reports of damage.

Already more than 1000 people have reported on the GNS website that they felt the quake.
