MetService has issued a severe weather watch for parts of the lower South Island, where a front moving from the northwest is expected to bring gale-force winds.

The strongest winds are expected to affect areas from Canterbury southwards from late Monday.

The front may also bring winds approaching severe gale strength in exposed areas in Otago, Fiordland, Southland and Stewart Island.

MetService advises people to stay up to date with weather forecasts in case the watch is upgraded to a warning or new areas are added.
