An apartment building full of Wellington students had to be evacuated this morning after a blaze, believed to have started in the garage.

12 fire appliances went to the Crombie Lockwood building on Dixon Street building just after 4am and found smoke spreading through the floors.

Nobody was injured and the Fire Service says that's probably thanks to the building's monitored fire alarm system.

"We didn't receive a 111 call to it, so if they hadn't had a fire alarm in the building we would not have known about it and that might have been a different story," fire communications manager Jan Wills says.

"Being that time of the morning, I guess everybody was asleep and the fire started in the garage so they wouldn't have known about it without the fire alarm going off."

Fire Safety officers are working today to determine the cause of the fire.

There was another fire in a large accommodation building just outside of Hastings early this morning.

The building was ablaze when firefighters arrived. Three fire trucks went to the fire in Stock Road at Bridge Pa and the Fire Service says there were no reports of injuries.
