Stun guns disguised as lipsticks

Friday 21 Dec 2012 6:04 p.m.

Illegal stun guns are being imported into New Zealand disguised as lipsticks.

Customs officers intercepted a package from China at the International Mail Centre in July and found three stun guns disguised as lipstick containers.

The package's recipient, 41-year-old Jonathan Norris of Waihi, was sentenced to four months home detention at the Waihi District Court on Wednesday.

Customs manager investigations Shane Panettiere said Norris had also imported six other stun guns and six pepper sprays between September 2011 and June 2012.

Some of the pepper spray devices Norris had imported also resembled lipsticks.

"Prohibited or restricted weapons such as stun guns and pepper sprays are often disguised to give the appearance of another article, but our officers are well aware of what to look for," Mr Panettiere said.

Norris was sentenced on six charges of importing stun guns, three charges of importing restricted weapons, as well as possessing drug paraphernalia and cannabis.

Customs has seized about 200 stun guns and pepper sprays in 2012.
