Mild yet changeable spring weather is set to continue as summer begins this weekend, but some places are very much in need of rain.
Weatherwatch.co.nz head analyst Philip Duncan says eastern and northern areas of both islands are drying out at the moment, having seen little rain in recent weeks.
He says having a spring weather pattern at the start of summer isn’t uncommon, and has both negative and positive consequences.
“The two main negatives being windier, drier weather for the east – not good for farming – and the other being cloudier and cooler for many of our more populated regions, like Auckland and the Waikato.”
He says those negatives can also bring positive effects including warmer weather for some regions and much-needed heavy rain for other areas.
“The hot, dry westerlies will bump daytime highs into the mid to late 20s for some eastern areas this weekend.
“Gloomier, cloudier weather in the west will produce heavy rain for the West Coast which may spill over into other regions of both islands.”
Mr Duncan says the weather overall will be very varied across the country with areas of rain, wind and heat, as well as cloud and dry weather.
Forecasts show all regions will get some rain in the next 10 days.
Mr Duncan says there is likely to be mixed weather across the country over summer including hot, calm weather and tropical rain.
