Around 210 new homes are expected to be built in Tauranga after the approval of two Special Housing Areas today.

Cabinet signed off the proposal today for the Papamoa and Ohauiti areas of the city, meaning resource consent for housing can be fast-tracked.

The announcement is on top of seven areas announced in February, bringing the total in the Government's Housing Accord with the Tauranga City Council to 1900.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says the two areas – 0.6 hectares on Domain Rd and 20.95 hectares on Adler Dr – will create around 36 and 180 homes respectively.

The Council recommended the areas last month and will be gazetted on Thursday which will allow owners to apply for resource consent.

Dr Smith thanked the council for their work, saying the city is beginning to see growth of house prices like other areas of the country.

"There is growing evidence that the housing pressures affecting Auckland are spreading to centres like Tauranga and Hamilton, and we need to free up land to bring new supply on-stream."
