Taxpayers get $43k bill for Brownlee inquiry

Former Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee is being told to cough up, as the taxpayer gets the bill for his airport security breach.

An inquiry into Mr Brownlee's decision to skip security at Christchurch Airport because he was running late has come in at just over $43,500.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he knows who should be picking up the tab.

"It begs the question why someone who was the minister, now Defence Minister, would have breached security, leading to an inquiry costing over $43,000 and then lump that on the taxpayer," says Mr Peters. "Surely there should be some accountability from Mr Brownlee as well, and the Cabinet."

Mr Peters says the incident shows Mr Brownlee thought he was above the law, because he's a minister.
