Passengers on board an Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch to Perth had an unexpected night in Victoria last night after technical issues forced their flight to divert to Melbourne.

The captain of the 767 service made the decision to land in Melbourne as a precaution after pilots observed an oil indication light on the flight deck.

Passengers were accommodated in Melbourne overnight and have been booked on domestic services to Perth this morning.

An Air New Zealand engineer is currently enroute to Melbourne to inspect the aircraft which has been removed from service.
