A teenage boy was indecently assaulted by a man on a bus in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon.

Police are seeking the public's help to identify the man responsible for the assault. He is described as a European in his mid 20s, of medium build, with a chubby face and dark neck-length hair combed to the rear, and a light goatee beard.

He was reportedly wearing a black ‘Forsyth Barr’ t-shirt, white shorts, and jandals.

Police say his 16-year-old victim was on the Leopard Coachlines No.5 bus between Brighton and Eastgate Mall in Linwood when he was assaulted.

"The information we have to date suggests the offender was at the bus stop on Beresford St, New Brighton prior to the assault," says Detective Brent Lyford.

"We believe the man exited the bus near Eastgate Mall and was last seen running east on Buckleys Rd."

Mr Lyford says the victim did not suffer any injuries, but was very distressed.

Anyone with information should contact Christchurch Police on (03) 363 7400, or the anonymous tip-off service Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
