A 17-year-old appeared in court today facing an arson charge after a large fire in south New Brighton yesterday.

Jayvan James Simms was remanded on bail when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court until later this month. He did not enter a plea.

He is charged with recklessly damaging vegetation by fire when he ought to know it was likely to cause danger to fire, Christchurch Court News reported.

Firefighters were called to the Southshore area yesterday afternoon and struggled to contain the blaze.

More than 60 crew members were at the site, along with 10 fire engines and a helicopter.

Houses were evacuated in the area and smoke was seen from across the city.
