Fire services have rescued 10 people from a burning Christchurch home as an ‘uncontrolled’ fire continues to burn to 15 minutes north of the city.

Four homes on Selwyn Rd, in Lincoln, have been destroyed in the fire, which has been described as “very big” and spreading “quite fast” by Fire Service spokesperson Ian Lynn.

Residents have been evacuated by police as firefighters battle with warm, strong nor’westers that have been gusting in the area.

Eight fire crews were at the site, with four helicopters also in attendance. Firefighers are also responding to a second grass fire at Waterloo Rd near Hornby.

Mr Lynn says the grass fires are keeping Canterbury’s fire response teams "fully committed”, with all units in action.

The grass fires follow a school fire in Beckenham, which destroyed a school library and classroom, and another fire that destroyed an Akaroa bakery this morning.
