The cost of Olympic glory

It has been New Zealand's most successful Olympic Games ever - 18 medals, but at what cost? Well, it's around $8.88 million per medal.

Figures from High Performance New Zealand show it spent about $160 million over the four year London/Rio cycle to get 200 athletes to Brazil.

New Zealand High Performance Sport says "... elite sport is seen to lead to both international prestige for the nation, inspiring the nation and importantly, to an increase in participation among the masses".

"This in turn leads to a healthier nation and to a wider pool of people from which to pick the champions of the future."

The medal haul puts New Zealand 19th on the medal table out of 207 nations and territories, but much higher when you take population into account. New Zealand ranks fourth in the number of medals per capita.

However, it is lower than London 2012, where New Zealand finished 14th because six golds were won, as compared to four in Rio.

Australia sent 422 athletes to Rio at a cost of AU$416.7 million (NZ$436m). For that, the Aussies achieved 29 medals, making each one worth AU$14.3 million (NZ$15m).

That puts them ninth overall on the medal table, which falls short of the Australian goal of a top five finish. It is one better than where the Aussies finished in London.
