Thief steals whole rack of clothes from Te Awamutu shop

A local business owner in Te Awamutu watched as more than $1500 worth of clothing was snatched from her store on Saturday.

Strutt Streetwear co-owner Shyralee MacDougall says her shop was hit in broad daylight.

"On Saturday a guy came in and actually grabbed a whole rack of clothing from my store, which were high ticket items like winter jackets."

Ms MacDougall said the incident on Saturday is just a number of thefts that happen weekly and these thefts are well planned.

"[The thief] had a car waiting around the corner. The driver had the engine on."

The store owner says insurance issues are hitting the local business in the pocket.

"We don't get covered by insurance. It has to be an aggressive robbery or an armed robbery for it to qualify.

"I've just watched $1,500 worth of my clothing walk out the door," she says.

The thieves weren't being subtle about the robbery as Ms MacDougall explains.

"There were a lot of customers around on Saturday morning so they do it in broad daylight in front of a whole lot of people.

Police couldn't be reached for comment.
