Anti-capitalism protesters have gathered in centres across the country this afternoon, galvanised by the Occupy Wall Street protestors.

Marches are taking place in the four main centres plus New Plymouth and Invercargill, kicking off a global day of protest.

In Auckland they are planning to occupy Aotea Square and remain there for days, and possibly weeks.

The movement is against greed by the finance sector and policians and is out to represent the 99 percent who do not receive the wealth that the remaining one percent do.

Global Peace and Justice spokesman Mike Treen is optimistic of a reasonable turnout of people who want to create a space where people can debate social justice issues.

Mr Treen is hoping facilities put in place for Rugby World Cup fans such as portaloos will be extended to the occupiers.

The Auckland protest left Britomart at 3pm.
