Thousands without power after windy night in Auckland

Almost 13,000 homes in Auckland are without power  after high winds buffeted the region overnight.

"The worst of the wind came through the region between midnight and 3:30am," says Vector's external relations manager, Sandy Hodge.

The winds blew trees, trampolines and other debris onto power lines, she says.

Vector crews are working to get the electricity back on, but Ms Hodge says that in many cases they will have to wait until fallen trees can be removed before restoring power.

Auckland Civil Defence says police and fire services attended around 90 weather-related callouts overnight, but there hasn't been widespread damage.

"There may still be minor travel disruption on the roads this morning," says Aaron Davis, Auckland Civil Defence's head of emergency operations.

"While it's been a wild lead-up to the holiday weekend, we expect the weather to settle down later today. Nevertheless, drivers should remain vigilant and take extra care on the roads."

MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths is also warning motorists to take care, even though the worst of the weather has passed.

"We're out power lines, we're out traffic lights, the commute across the bridge this morning might not be that much fun," she says.

"It's pretty much cleared Northland now. We had some extremely large gusts last night, a very windy night in Northland and Auckland."

Ms Griffiths says the weather is looking pretty good for the Easter weekend in most places -- but people in the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty regions should expect heavy rain later today.

"It's going to be a very wet, extended wet day with downpours for that area," she says.
