Three people have been rescued after their boat capsized whilst attempting to cross the Kawhia Bar in the Waikato.

Police were notified of the incident at 9:50am today that saw two men in their 30's and a 14-year-old boy rescued by a local charter boat that was nearby.

All three men on board had lifejackets on and were taken back to Kawhia where they were medically checked over and cleared.

According to police, the men on board were doing everything right and it was the unpredictability of the bar that led to the boat being overturned.

Police are warning anybody considering crossing the Kawhia Bar that they should seek advice from the Coastguard on how to do so safely.

Boaties in the area should also be cautious of the upturned boat.
