Hundreds of lightning strikes have been recorded over Auckland’s western suburbs in the hours before lunch today.

WeatherWatch.co.nz warns that heavy downpours and thunder can be expected over the west and south of the city early this afternoon.

Motorists in these areas are advised to prepare for a sudden loss of visibility in localised heavy downpours, while a moderate risk of surface flooding and flash flooding is predicted.

WeatherWatch also advised there is a low to moderate risk of a funnel cloud forming but a minimal risk of a tornado.

As of 11:30am, intense rain was falling just off the west coast of Auckland, near Piha.
