Huge black thunder clouds have moved over the capital this afternoon and the Metservice says hail and strong winds are imminent.

Wellingtonians awoke to blue skies this morning but a southerly change has moved in and the skies have turned black.

Metservice says the thunderstorm will be severe and bring hailstones up to 2cm in diameter.

Wind gusts reaching more than 110km/h are also forecast and could result in damaged trees and powerlines.

The Metservice warns driving conditions will be hazardous this afternoon and motorists need to take caution.

The storm is expected to be short-lived and is unlikely to continue beyond 8pm.
