A large tornado is understood to have passed through Rotorua this afternoon.
A 3 News cameraman said the tornado had lifted the roof off his garage at his Sunnex Rd address in the Hamurana suburb.
A school is also believed to have been evacuated in Rotorua.
It comes just hours after what is believed to have been a series of tornadoes tore through West Auckland, killed three people and leaving several injured.
Between 100 and 150 west Auckland homes have been damaged, with many deemed uninhabitable.
