A 24-year-old man is dead after being stabbed at his home in east Auckland's Half Moon Bay.

Police say the man who attacked him was an old school friend, who was found after he left the scene and crashed his car into another house nearby.

The driver survived, but was pulled from the wreck with what police say were self-inflicted knife wounds.

The home’s tenant got the shock of his life as the car ploughed into his deck.

“I'd been watching meteor strikes in Russia [and had] just hoped into bed, heard a car coming. It sounded like it was going quite quick, and then there was this almighty bang and the house literally shook like an earthquake,” says tenant Mike Slade.

Three kilometres away from the crash scene, police found a body with stab wounds inside a house in Half Moon Bay.

“There's no information that we've got date that would indicate any prior conflict or any motive by way of money, drugs, alcohol. None of those ingredients feature in this case at all,” says Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher

Police say the man who crashed his car had been at the house last night. He's recovering in hospital and police are yet to lay any charges.

Police want to talk to anyone who saw a silver 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage in the area around Godsford Dr and Fiesta Dr between 9:30pm and 11pm last night.
