Trampers approve of higher charges for tourists

Tramping groups believe overseas tourists should be charged more to use our Department of Conservation (DoC) huts.

The Government is considering the idea, as it wants to recover some of the $80 million spent on the huts, tracks and campsites each year.

Trampers say that's only fair, because overseas tourists spend more time in our National Parks than we do.

"People who come here on a holiday have all the time in the world to spend there, while people like me have to squeeze it in on weekends and public holidays," says David Barnes of the Federated Mountain Clubs.

"So you get someone who comes here for three months, some of them spend the whole three months in national parks."

DoC currently charges the same for everyone.
