Tremain 'keeping distance' in Brown saga

The Local Government Minister jumped the gun yesterday when he turned up to Parliament with a briefing note on a mayor's resignation.

But embattled Auckland mayor Len Brown hasn't thrown in the towel, despite intense publicity about his two-year long affair with Bevan Chuang.

Chris Tremain claims he's keeping his distance from the whole matter.

"I'm not accountable for the election of those officials," he says. "Mayors are accountable to their ratepayers, so I don't see that I have a role in this."

Ms Chuang appears to have gone into hiding following revelations yesterday she came under pressure from Luigi Wewege to expose her sexual relationship with Mr Brown.

Mr Wewege was part of the team behind John Palino's failed bid for the mayoralty.

Cameron Slater, the blogger behind the initial release of the story, said Ms Chuang was fragile and overwhelmed.
