Two people have been killed and several others injured in a series of crashes in and around Tauranga on Friday afternoon, leaving police to describe the situation as "havoc".
The fatal accident happened after a car broke down on SH29A, Maungatapu, between Baypark and Welcome bay, and appears to have involved five vehicles.
One person died at the scene and another later in hospital.
Diversions were in place but the road has since reopened.
Another crash happened at around the same time on Pyes Pa Road and involved two vehicles colliding and bringing power lines down. Police said there were no injuries from that accident and no road blocks were in place.
Two more minor crashes took place shortly after 4pm - one in The Strand involving two vehicles and another on SH2 in Bethlehem where a car hit a tree, the driver suffering minor cuts to their hand.
Police are urging motorists in the region to take extra care.
