Two more aftershocks, rated 'strong', have struck off the coast of East Cape on Thursday morning.

Geonet reported a 5.0-magnitude quake, 20 kilometres deep and 80kms off the coast of Te Araroa just after 4am, and a 4.6-magnitude quake, 17kms deep and 70kms off the coast.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck in the same area on September 2, generating a 30cm tsunami.

A number of strong aftershocks have rattled the East Cape since then.

Just further north in the Bay of Plenty, White Island's alert level was raised from 1 to 3 when the volcano emitted a small eruption of ash on September 13.
