It's been a comparatively toasty winter and the warm weather is set to continue into spring, NIWA says.

Some regions may near 25degC in the next few days.

"We are forecasting unseasonable warmth on Thursday and Friday across the east of both islands, where temperatures may rise to between 5degC and 10degC above the average maximum daily temperature," says NIWA forecaster Ben Noll.

And the strong high pressure bringing this warmth is set to repeat over the next few weeks, potentially breaking temperature records.

Winter, which ends on Wednesday, has set a handful of records itself this year.

The first eight months of the year have been the hottest on record, with Napier setting the highest winter temperature this year on June 10 at 25.1degC and the highest for Napier on record.

On the same day Gisborne set its own record for its highest temperature on record, at 23.2degC.

The chilliest place this winter was Takahe Valley, near Te Anau, at -17.8degC on August 7.
