The Duchess of Cornwall, on her first visit to New Zealand, has a bit to learn about Kiwi culture it would appear – like not wearing a hat when you're trying to perform a hongi.

Meeting representatives from Ngati Whatua at Auckland Museum yesterday, Camilla had trouble taking part in the traditional Maori greeting.

Why? Because she wouldn't remove her designer Philip Treacy hat.

"The Duchess said, 'You can get under my hat?' and I said, 'It's a bit hard,'" says elder Grant Hawke.

"Luckily she didn't have a flat nose, like mine."

Watch the video for the awkward encounter.
