Video: CCTV footage emerges after Palmerston North abduction

CCTV footage has emerged of a white sedan speeding away from the spot where a five-year-old girl was abducted in Palmerston North.

Police can't confirm it is the car driven by the abductor but say it is a vehicle of interest and they would like to speak to the driver.

It can be seen travelling down Shamrock St towards the city at 8:18am and then speeding the other direction towards Featherston St 10 minutes later.

Five-year-old Shekinah Te Kira-Skipper was walking with her sisters to school on Friday, when she was pushed into a car by a strange man and taken at about 8:30am.

She was dropped off on Hind Pl two-and-a-half hours later, and is now at home with her family.

Yesterday Inspector Sarah Stewart said police were looking for a 1988-1995 model white Nissan Maxima in relation to the abduction.

The car has a "very distinctive back end" that people might remember seeing.

"While this vehicle may not have been involved, we are keen to hear from anyone who saw it in the areas mentioned above or from the driver of the vehicle itself."

Today police have also provided a rough description of the man who pulled Shekinah into his car.

"The male is described as being in his late 50s with grey 'salt-and-pepper' hair and with facial stubble.

"He is also described as being 5 foot 9 inches [175cm] tall, of a slim build and Caucasian.

"He does have a scruffy and unkempt look, and may have some teeth missing."

They're urging members of the public who may have seen a man fitting this description in the area on Friday morning to come forward.
