Christchurch residents have been warned of a strong north-westerly expected to hit this afternoon that will stir up dust in the city.

Mayor Bob Parker said this morning at a media conference the wind will create warm and blustery conditions that could run for 24 hours.

“That is of great concern to us because there is a lot of dust in the city, a lot of silt, the figure of estimate for us is about 180,000 tonnes – last time we had 30,000 tonnes.”

Mr Parker says it is hoped the dried liquefaction will be cleared by the end of the week, but the wind will spread it around the city and poses the threat of irritating people’s breathing.
