An Auckland man had a close encounter with a pod of orca as he rode his jetski near Waiheke at the weekend.
Kirk Davis was heading back in from a day of fishing when he saw “something large” bobbing in the water.
“It was actually a small whale that was sitting on his tail and was just bobbing up and down vertically,” he says.
When I went a bit closer and had a look, there was probably around five or six of them there.”
Mr Davis says after a while the orcas started to trust him and let him get closer.
“I became one of the pod,” he says.
“We cruised for probably, four miles around the bottom end of Waiheke.
The orcas had surrounded his jetski and were playing with Mr Davis’ rolling camera when he held it underwater and even appeared to be “smiling”.
“It was an unbelievable experience,” he says.
