Video: 'Distressed woman' in socks goes ignored on NZ streets

An actor playing a distressed woman wearing pyjamas on a busy New Zealand street has been largely ignored by passers-by in the latest NZ Police recruitment video.

The footage was filmed as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the more than 500 mental health related calls the police receive each week.

The actor in the film is seen walking around looking confused with a teddy in her arms. Many people pass her without stopping before one woman asks if she can help.

"Distressed people need someone who's going to be calm and understanding of their needs," says New Zealand Police Mental Health team Inspector Sue Douglas.

"While Police is not the lead agency on mental health, they are often the first responders to these situations."

He says the police force needs more people who can respond to incidents like this in a calm, professional and empathetic manner.

Other videos from the 'Do You Care Enough to be a Cop?' series went viral reaching millions worldwide.
