Video: Dolphins make Wellington pit stop

A pod of dolphins have made Wellington's Lyall Bay their playground today, spending part of the morning in the popular surfing spot.

The pod of around 20 common dolphins was likely to be passing through the area rather than feeding, according to the Department of Conservation (DOC).

It was a sight unlikely to have been seen by many, with few onlookers around at the time.

As their name suggests, common dolphins are one of the most frequently seen in New Zealand waters.

DOC believe the pod could have been passing by because large pods aren't often seen feeding near Wellington.

The dophins sometimes appear in Wellington Harbour during summer.

Dusky dolphins, characterised by their bluish-black colour on the back and tail, and white on the underside, are also sometimes seen in Wellington.
