Former broadcaster Sir Paul Holmes has been farewelled in Auckland today.

The iconic presenter passed away a week ago after a long battle with prostate cancer and heart problems.

Those gathered at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Church did so to pay their respects and remember the career of a man who spent most of his adult life in the public eye.

Speaking at the service this afternoon, former news presenter John Hawkesby paid tribute to the man with "the big heart".

"So long, you clever, charming, courageous, cheeky little whitey," he said.

Sir Paul's children, Millie Elder-Holmes and Reuben Holmes, each paid tribute to their father with a quote.

Millie quoted the man himself: "Good luck to your all, but make your own luck".

"If you can dream it, begin it."
