A fight broke out in the Manukau District Court as a man charged with the murder of Leslie Putt made his first appearance.

Mr Putt was shot dead after a fight on Saturday morning in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa.

Bodi McKee, 23, has been charged with Mr Putt's murder and also with the unlawful possession of a firearm.

The courtroom was packed with McKee's family members, who whispered messages of support as he stood in the dock.

McKee broke down in tears as he told his family members he loved them, before trying to fight the security guards who were in the dock with him.

As he was dragged out of the dock, family members also started lashing out. Security had to hold them back.

His mum could be heard saying "don't touch my son like that you f****** faggots" and also telling the police officers to "step outside".

McKee could be heard in the cells still trying to fight the police officers.

He's been remanded in custody pending a psychiatric evaluation.

His next appearance is October 19 at the Auckland High Court.

Police had been hunting for McKee in relation to the incident. They confirmed they had found and arrested him at an address in Takanini earlier on Monday morning.
