Voluntary student membership debate continues

University students around the country have been protesting this week against a proposed law change that would make student union membership voluntary.

ACT Party MP, Heather Roy, put her Freedom of Association bill, also known the Voluntary Student Membership bill, before parliament two years ago.

But even before that, the University of Auckland chose to make its student union membership voluntary back in 1999; a move its association now says was a mistake, because it has undermined student services.
