Waikato DHB conducting review after patient death

Waikato District Health Board (DHB) is conducting a review into the death of a patient.

A woman died last week while on unescorted leave the night before being discharged from the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre - the same centre where Hamilton's Nicky Stevens was under a compulsory care order, before he was found dead in the Waikato River in 2015.

Derek Wright from the Mental Health and Addictions Service, says the woman was transitioning into living in the community and once it was clear she wasn't returning as arranged police were notified.

He says the DHB is supporting the woman's family, who are happy with the care she had received.

The matter is being referred to the coroner.
