A former Waikato school principal has been jailed for 2 years and six and a half months over charges relating to child pornography.

Bruce Darroch was earlier found guilty of four charges including making an objectionable publication, and possessing objectionable material.

He's also refused to hand over passwords and codes to his computer and hard-drive.

The 51-year-old stood solemnly with his hands clasped as the court heard how he'd shared stories online detailing his sexual fantasies with boys.

Those stories were accompanied by images of children -- including pupils at his school.

He was also found to be in possession of hundreds of photos of child sex abuse.

One of his teenage victims and the boy's mother both shook as they read victim impact statements -- describing the effect Darroch's offending has had on their lives.

The boy told the court he can no longer trust people.

"I used to wonder why I was singled out and why I was made to feel uneasy, and now I know why and it makes me sick."

He explained how he receives counselling, suffers anxiety, and has nightmares.

"I now feel depressed and angry wherever I go because there's no telling what people may know about me."

The boy was later escorted out of the gallery for an outburst directed at Darroch.

Judge Tony Snell found the content of the words in Darroch's stories were of the highest level of seriousness.

"They talk about rape and detention, and exploitation of children for your sexual purposes. Those words were accompanied by images of real children, real children from your school."

He said the extent of harm caused permeated right throughout the community -- and he could not consider home detention in this case.
