Two Waikato schools are being given more than $8 million for a revamp.

Cambridge High School will be getting around $9 million and Ngaruawahia High School $8 million.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the schools will be able to prioritise where the money goes.

"Those schools, there's some refurbishing to be done. They have some old building blocks and some old classrooms."

Ms Parata says the money will go a long way.

"They're most definitely in need of a fix-up. They've had some quite old and dark buildings that they've had for some while.

"For the first time, as a Government we've been looking at what the condition is of every school building and classroom around the country, and that means we know exactly where the priorities are, and Cambridge and Ngaruawahia are two of those."

Construction is set to start at both schools in 2018.
