Auckland residents are getting hot under the collar about the private sale of fireworks.

Waitakere Ranges residents are calling on their local MP John Key, to take action to ensure a Guy Fawkes without bush fires.

Former chair of the Waitakere Ranges local board Sandra Coney says it's prohibited to let off fireworks in the public areas in the Waitakere Ranges.

"Because a lot of the areas are very remote, it's not possible to bring the police in to enforce it," she told Newshub.

"We were looking at public firework displays rather than individual, private people being able to let them off anywhere."

Ms Coney says she's written to Mr Key but he won't take any action.

"He suggested we do some things that weren't really relevant, like talking to the Department of Conservation - we don't have any Department of Conservation land out our way, the public park is all owned by the Auckland council."

Ms Coney says there's been a proliferation of pop-up fireworks outlets in the area which they want to see restricted.
