Police have apologised after erroneously saying a man had died in a crash on Wednesday morning.
The man is in Southland Hospital with critical head injuries after the crash in Wallacetown.
"Unfortunately initial information indicated that the man was deceased," police said in a statement.
"Police apologise for the error and the distress caused to the man's family by the release of the erroneous information."
