Hikers, especially from overseas, are being reminded to let someone know where they're going when they head into New Zealand's big outdoors.

It comes after an American mother and daughter were rescued yesterday, after spending four days lost in the rugged Tararua Forest Park.

The Search and Rescue Council's Duncan Ferner says the pair should have made their intentions known.

He says hikers should let somebody know where they're going, when they're expected out, and what equipment they have.

"On our AdventureSmart website there is a page that you can do that. You don't have to fill out a bit of paper and just leave it on the fridge as the Kiwi habit might be. So it's set up for tourists -- they can leave their intentions electronically," he says.

Mr Ferner says people must always plan trips, take the right equipment, check the weather and make sure they can handle what they're doing.
