A convicted, high-risk paedophile who breached his supervision conditions numerous times since his release from prison in 2009 has been ordered back behind bars.
Brian Conroy, 43, appeared at the High Court in Wellington today to be sentenced on four counts of breaching supervision orders and two counts of indecent assault on a nine-year-old girl.
Justice David Collins sent him to prison for three years and nine months, saying his risk of reoffending did not meet the requirements of preventive detention, despite the Crown asking for it.
Throughout the sentencing, Conroy sobbed while he stood in the dock.
His lawyer Louise Brown argued that he was willing to undergo further treatment including taking medicine.
Conroy was found and arrested in Stokes Valley by police at the end of June after spending two months on the run from police.
In 2006, Conroy was sent to prison for four-and-a-half years for indecent assault and unlawful sexual connection with a six-year-old girl.
Upon his release in 2009, he breached an extended supervision order and was sent back to prison for 10 months. He then breached them again in 2011 and was sent to prison for one year and three months.
