Wellington's university students are demanding subsidised public transport to get to class, warning of a migration to other cities if they aren't listened to.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council turned down an oral submission yesterday for a 25 percent student discount to be added to this year's annual plan.

Councillor Sue Kedgley also proposed that Wellington City Council contribute $75,000 and tertiary institutions collectively contribute $75,000.

But this was voted down, and Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association president Jonathan Gee says that's unfair.

"We pay so much to be in tertiary education, yet many students can't afford to get to class."

He says cheaper transport plays a big part in deciding where to study.

"I want to go to Otago because I can live closer to campus and I don't have to pay for public transport, or I can move up to Auckland because there's a 40 percent discount for students there."

Palmerston North has free fares for students.
