Wellington's winter in spring

The wintry blast which has hit parts of the North Island has produced a rare sight in the capital - snow.

Though Wellington is known as the coolest little capital in the world, it wasn't cool enough for the snow to stick around.

There were reports of snow falling in the higher suburbs of Wellington, including in Karori.

There was also a light dusting of the white stuff on a number of roads.

The city's been hit by rain and hail, making driving conditions in the city a bit tricky. Police urged drivers to take care and avoid all unnecessary driving.

It also made for rough seas, with Interislander and Bluebridge both cancelling trips.

Hail made training a bit more exciting for Wellington Lions players who had been braving the weather at Rugby League Park, but ran for shelter once they started getting pelted.

The Rimutaka Hill on State Highway 2 was also blanketed, causing its closure for part of Thursday morning. It has since re-opened.
